A new Caravan has rolled into town. Building on the success of Caravan in Exmouth Market (an establishment which almost single-handedly fuelled the caffeine needs of those at onefinestay HQ) the new Caravan has parked itself in Kings Cross. Its arrival officially makes the area London’s hottest new neighbourhood, and there are other developments aplenty. Sharing a building with Central St Martins College of Art and Design, the new Caravan epitomises ‘industrial chic’ with a mixture of concrete, exposed brickwork and reclaimed metal. This place is cool, really cool. With high expectations for this ambitious new venture, team onefinestay headed down for the evening.
Who goes here: This place is sure to be a hit with the art school crowd, but it’s not exclusive. From shirts to slacks, there is a mixed crowd.
Why you’ll want to visit: The globetrotting menu presents some culinary triumphs. In a large group it is well worth ordering some (or all) of the ‘small plates’ just to get a taste of everything. The big hits on our table were the chorizo and butternut squash croquettes, scallop ceviche and mackerel fillets. With a giant roaster and grinder at the back, you can be assured that the coffee is top notch as well.
What to look out for: Sit along the sofa if you can. It’s made out of recycled army uniforms and mighty comfortable. If you’re not lucky enough to be on the sofa then find comfort in watching the chefs through the metal grille as they expertly prepare the dishes.
When to go: Dinner is the perfect time to go for good food and cocktails, but the brunch menu presents some interesting prospects too.
How to find it: Granary Building, 1 Granary Square, London, N1C 4AA
Our nearest homes: Chill out in the canalside Ice Wharf
