There are many ways to explore a city – whether you want to wander at leisure or harness some insider knowledge and take a guided tour. We headed out with Emiko Davies to explore the city and see what we could find.
Make Rome your own, and follow these tips to experience Roman life at its best.
Find your feet
There’s no better way to experience a city than on foot. Rome is a compact city, far smaller than London or Paris – it’s only an hour’s walk from Villa Borghese in Northern Rome to the Appian Way in the south of the city. It’s also well-served by metro trains, buses and trams, in case you run out of steam.
Drink it all in
Cafés are an integral part of Roman life, and finding your new favourite café is a great way to get to know the city – whether you want to spend a quiet morning over a maritozzo and a cappuccino, or (as the Romans do) pop in for quick pit-stop espresso before returning to the bustle of the city. We’ve put together a list of tips to help you drink coffee like an Italian.
Get a taste for the city
No trip to Rome would be complete without browsing the busy food markets. Campo de’ Fiori and the Testaccio market are both firm favourites among locals. Keep an eye out for San Marzano tomatoes – grown in the hills beneath Mount Vesuvius, and commonly regarded as the best in the world.
Take a tour
When you stay with us in Rome, your onefinestay iPhone will be loaded with local tips, area info and unlimited free data, so you can easily navigate and discover your new neighbourhood. We’re also partnered with Context – private guides and tours for the intellectually curious traveller. Context offers excellent tours in cities all over the world, but Rome is where they began. Each tour is led by an expert: you can scour the food markets and tavole calde with a professional chef, tour the Vatican with an art historian, or discover ancient ruins with an archeologist.
We’re offering guests a free Context tour as part of stays in Rome between September – December 2016. After you’ve booked, we’ll contact you to arrange the details.
